Aboriginal Comedy Allstars - Spiegeltent Wollongong (NSW)

Featuring Sean Choolburra, Kevin Kropinyeri, Andy Saunders and Steph Tisdell

Review by Charlotte Smee

From the oldest culture on earth to the historic Spiegeltent comes an incredibly warm, welcoming and funny hour of laughs from seasoned Aboriginal comedians Sean Choolburra, Kevin Kropinyeri, and Andy Saunders. Steph Tisdell was unfortunately unable to perform at the Spiegeltent due to COVID-19.

Sean Choolburra as the effervescent MC brought bundles of energy. A blend of fast paced jokes and dancing his way through the 60s to 00s really set the tone for the rest of the show, keeping us ready to laugh until our cheeks hurt.

First up, Kropinyeri graced the stage with his signature vest, shirt, and tie combo. A colossal stage presence, he kindly but firmly welcomes “white fellas” and “black fellas” alike to laugh together at his sharp stand up and outrageous physical comedy. With jokes defining Aboriginal slang like “deadly” and “book up” followed by a hilarious rendition of a woman trying to finish her drink when singing Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” on the dancefloor, his set was the perfect blend of ridiculous and thought-provoking.

Saunders’s standout bit came right as he started, complete with t-shirt printed punchline. He followed this up with well-crafted stories like getting revenge on his kids for not taking out the garbage and other family dramas. A solid, well-paced set. His beat-boxing at the start and end of the show when the cast came together was also a great show of talent.

If you somehow still can’t talk to your white parents or your boss about Aboriginal issues, bring them along to the Aboriginal Comedy Allstars and they’ll do some learning without even noticing! Laughter in this show is the spoonful of sugar we all need.

The Aboriginal Comedy Allstars performed at the Illawarra's famous Spiegeltent on Sunday 13th March. Check out the whole lineup taking places in the famous Spiegeltent here
